There’s one thing that having a child with autism does better than just about anything else: it makes me take stock of every single thing that Sara does. Things that might be taken for granted in other kids have a LOT of meaning when viewed in light of Sara’s development.
Case in point…
Yesterday, riding home with Julie from daycare, Sara points out the window and says “airplane.” Indeed, out her window was an airplane flying through the sky, a frequent sight when you live within a mile or so of an airport.
To my knowledge, this marks the first time that Sara has commented on her surroundings outside of a desire for whatever the object is that she’s talking about. She’s pointed at McDonald’s, and she’s noticed and commented on the absence of her sister if Emma’s out playing when she gets home, but this is the first time that she’s said something just to say it. How many parents with typically developing kids can mark that milestone? I couldn’t tell you when it happened for Emma, to be certain.
So yeah. March 27th, 2007. “Airplane.” Tada.
