Still kickin’ for all my Chinese fans

According to the Great Firewall of China, my site is not banned in China!

So if you’re in China for some reason, you can access the site in all its glory. The strong arm of communism has not reached across the mighty oceans to firmly put its hand over my mouth to go “shhhh.”

Dirty Thirty

98 Rock, Baltimore’s Rock Station, turned thirty years old yesterday. It hasn’t changed formats, and hasn’t gone away for any period of time.

Congratulations… it’s good to know that radio stations CAN be older than me.

Wii Browser Full Edition Slated For April

Via The Global Wii Experience Website, I learned today that the full version of the Wii web browser is forthcoming. That rocks. Well, it rocks for me, and Rick, and other Wii owners, but maybe not for everyone else.

Just be happy that I’m happy, OK?

Sky High Moments

Filed under: Family — steegness @ 8:14 am

There’s one thing that having a child with autism does better than just about anything else: it makes me take stock of every single thing that Sara does. Things that might be taken for granted in other kids have a LOT of meaning when viewed in light of Sara’s development.

Case in point…

Yesterday, riding home with Julie from daycare, Sara points out the window and says “airplane.” Indeed, out her window was an airplane flying through the sky, a frequent sight when you live within a mile or so of an airport.

To my knowledge, this marks the first time that Sara has commented on her surroundings outside of a desire for whatever the object is that she’s talking about. She’s pointed at McDonald’s, and she’s noticed and commented on the absence of her sister if Emma’s out playing when she gets home, but this is the first time that she’s said something just to say it. How many parents with typically developing kids can mark that milestone? I couldn’t tell you when it happened for Emma, to be certain.

So yeah. March 27th, 2007. “Airplane.” Tada.

Most of these types of nerds are considered dirty who lack hygeine, of course they always end up being the ones who make a crapload of money. And don’t worry, that’s just a stereotype; I’m not calling you dirty. ^_~

Caffeine alternatives

Caffeine—can’t live with/out it | Ask MetaFilter

So the Hive Mind was quizzed on what to do in lieu of caffeine for kicks, buzzes, and the oft-uncovered “mojo”. As I have a steaming cup of joe next to me right this second, and I have friends that have an automatic drip IV in their arm, it seemed like a worthy topic of blogging.

Exercise seems to be a popular choice, but for those of us who have trouble waking up ANYWAY, it seems less than ideal. There are also a number of teas and such mentioned as well, but I’m wary of them, mainly due to possible price and availability issues (say what you will about coffee, but it’s damn sure ubiquitous).

There’s a mindset that I feel I need to hit for morning happiness, but I (almost) never make it there. Coffee’s helps get me significantly closer, but I realize that it’s a poor substitute for… whatever it is I’m lacking.

The Effort Effect

From the minds of Stanford: a thirty-year study on static and dynamic mindsets.

Read over the link, and then come back. I’ll wait.

Done? Good. Now, for those with kids, think about your kids. For everyone, think about your co-workers. Can you see where they fit in relation to this study?

Emma seems to be a pretty classic case of stasis. My mom says I was too, but I don’t think I was, certainly not to the extent that Emma is. Emma complains of boredom, and then shuns every suggestion given to her since she can’t excel at it. I don’t remember being that bored. :)

Sara’s a different nugget to crack with regards to this study. I’ll have to think a bit more about her (though commenters who know her are welcome to jump in with thoughts).

Deep, deep thoughts.
