Writing More

Filed under: Thoughts — steegness @ 10:51 am

I often find myself wanting to fill this space more often than I do.

I don’t know exactly what I want to write about. Family sometimes, “deep thoughts” during others, or maybe why I do the things I do. Maybe just stuff I like, such as Sara dancing an Irish Jig, or Jodi’s Jodi’s picture of the girls.

It’s a theme for life, really: wanting more for the effort you’re putting in. Maybe once I get a chip implanted in my brain, posting to this will be easier (and a far more entertaining read).

Amazing what can happen when people’s jobs are at stake.

The Best Men

Filed under: Friends — steegness @ 11:23 am

Last night, a call came in. A man who had been on my mind a fair amount recently was calling me up. My best man, my best friend, called me up to tell me that he was now engaged to a beautiful, charming, and overall great woman with whom he’d been living in St. Louis for no small amount of time. And honestly, to my surprise, he asked me to be his (sorta) best man.

Why (sorta)? Because his brother will be filling the appointed role. I totally understand the move; had I a brother, I’d probably have done the same thing for my wedding. I’m still likely to fill most of the ‘Head Groomsman’ type roles, but much remains to be seen, as his phone call was to tell me merely that on the previous night, he asked, and she said yes.

He’s been in my head a fair amount lately. I’ve been reading up on his internet-published works recently, trying to follow his life despite distance and a years-long lull in communication. I’ve gotten some glimpses, but mostly, it’s been me reflecting back and wondering what the future holds.

I was honestly, truly surprised to have been called to serve in an offical capacity at this future nuptual. I mean, he and I go WAY back, and while our friendship runs quite deep, it’s also been somewhere around four or five years (maybe more?) since we’ve seen each other. There’s a LOT that can change, even in shorter amounts of time than that. Expecting that I would be his best man was a foolish hope, but in thinking about it, it was about the only hope I had. I’ve no small number of friends, but I’m not the top of the heap for any of them. He was my best chance, but with the winnowing power of time, it wasn’t something I could count on.

Until last night, at least. :)

Oh, and if you’re reading this: I know a little girl who’s DYING to be a flower girl in a wedding.

Mama’s Got A Brand New Bag

Filed under: Family — steegness @ 10:48 am

Starting now-ish, Julie is doing some marketing work for Eastern Entertaining, a fine locally-focused publication. As their schedule is not aggressive and their work not full time, she’s able to do this at her own pace and in her own time.

This rocks a great deal, and there is much rejoicing.
